    Con Dao Island

By Mark Bowyer / Last updated 01 Jul 2009
Con Dao Island is around 200kms from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The prison established by the French on the island was the most brutal in colonial era Indochina. Many of its alumni went on to become the most celebrated of Vietnam's communist leaders. Much of the prison still stands as a chilling reminder of those days. Con Dao is also home to stunning beaches and a quaint small colonial era town. Travellers are discovering its beauty and its stories.

Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
