The most modest ruins can be some of the most atmospheric. And it often depends on when you arrive.
I had Wat Ek Phnom to myself as the sun went down and it was a very memorable experience. The 11th century temple is modest compared to the main Angkorian offerings of Siem Reap and much of the structure has collapsed. Some of the carvings remain in good condition.
The open setting with a new temple, some statues and a baray is picturesque.
The journey out is half the fun with rice paper making, an old Pepsi factory and rich green rice paddies.
Best avoided on weekends if possible when it becomes a popular local picnic spot.
