More from the travel vault - this time travels to southern Laos in 2016. We visit 4000 Islands, Champasak and explore the Mekong. Southern Laos is a precious part of the world along this enchanting river. It's a region of constant reminders of the fragility of serene village lives. The Mekong River is the source of everything here and the river also finds itself under development and geo-political pressure. This is a beautiful, mellow part of South East Asia with limited mass tourism, that has so-far stayed clear of mass-development. It's a privilege to travel in Laos. One of the great issues for ethical travel post-COVID will be confronting the best course for saving places like this from the destructive force of open-slather tourism development - while accepting the economic aspirations of local people.
