A large military cemetery in the centre of town is the resting place for some of the Viet Minh fighters who lost their lives in the battle of Dien Bien Phu. The names of the fallen are inscribed on a large wall at the cemetery's entrance. If you've gotten carried away with the strategic and geopolitical significance of the battle, a visit to the cemetery will ram home the human cost of the battle.
