Koto is a great place for a meal or a drink close by Hanoi’s Temple of Literature. And this is no ordinary restaurant. Founded in the mid 1990s by Jimmy Pham, an Australian of Vietnamese origin, KOTO (Know One Teach One) operates as a hospitality training school for some of Vietnam’s most disadvantaged young people. So you can combine a great meal, a juice or a coffee and make a modest contribution to the education of some wonderful young people. KOTO’s graduates are holding down senior roles in hotels and restaurants across Vietnam and internationally. President Bill Clinton popped in for lunch in 2000 as did Australian PM Julia Gillard in 2011. The menu is a mix of western and local dishes. Koto has an inspired buzz that’s generated by the wonderful energy of its students. Highly recommended.

Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
