New openings, improved cycling and walking and ways to get around - there have been many positive developments in Sydney in recent years. They’ve lifted the city for residents and they make Sydney a more compelling place for travellers.

Sydney is one of the world’s great cities. The stunning beauty of its harbour is well known and a huge draw for tourists. Sydney's problem may be that its harbour icons are so well known that they overshadow everything else. There’s much more to Sydney than The Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Bondi Beach. This is a city to get to know with some proper time here. Off the harbour, Sydney's a city of diverse cultures, outstanding cuisine, atmospheric neighbourhoods, architecture and a fascinating history. Sydney also has some of the best public spaces in the world for you to explore.

When I meet international travellers on our Sydney heritage walks, I usually discover their stay here will be just 2 or 3 nights and it doesn’t get beyond the harbour and the coast. That’s such a shame. Travelling all the way to Australia for a two night stay in Sydney is crazy. If you’ve made it here, do it properly. Reduce the number of stops on your itinerary and spend more time in each place. If a place is worth visiting from afar it’s worth a proper stay. We say spend at least 5 nights in and around Sydney.

In these two videos (above), we hope to give you a sense of Sydney beyond its best-known icons - cycling, getting around, exploring, museums, art and more. Stay longer and get a real sense of the city.
