I’ve met some wonderful people and had some wonderful times shooting videos for Rusty Compass over the past 8 years. A highlight was a few days in 2008 spent in Hanoi with blind stringed instrument virtuoso Kim Sinh, and Australian blues guitarist, Dom Turner.
I was reminded of those few days this week when Dom Turner let me know that Kim Sinh passed away a few year ago.
You’ll get a sense what a wonderful character Kim was from the video. And the collision between the blues and Vietnamese musical traditions is also fascinating.
American guitarist Ry Cooder collaborated with Kim Sinh a few years earlier.
Back in 2008 I expected to be doing a lot of this kind of thing with Rusty Compass. It’s been surprisingly rare however. I’m not sure whether it’s because such musical collaboration is uncommon, or whether I’m just not hearing about it.
Meeting Kim Sinh and getting a sense of his character and musical depth, and watching the collaboration with Dom, was a privilege.
Two Days in Hanoi was the product of the collaboration between Kim Sinh and Dom Turner and you can pick it up on iTunes here - https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/two-days-in-hanoi/id1093338170
