Hanoi Citadel was the centre of military power in the capital for centuries. It was from a small reinforced concrete bunker inside these walls that North Vietnam's famed general, Vo Nguyen Giap, ran the military campaign against US-backed South Vietnam, culminating in victory in April 1975. In 2010, the military packed up and left and Hanoi Citadel opened to the public. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and well worth a visit. In a sign of the times, in this shot, the former stronghold of Vietnam's military is used to showcase a new Bentley with a glamorous model back in 2011.
Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
