Nha Trang is Vietnam's most popular beach resort town. Travellers with an interest in history have long wandered up to this spectacular headland overlooking the bay to visit the former summer residence of Vietnam's last king, Bao Dai. This week I discovered that the whole area is closed to visitors and construction has commenced on a development of new, exclusive, villas for sale to Vietnam's new elite. The main villa in Bao Dai's 1920s complex looks likely to be kept, but from the plans posted at the front, the other buildings will be demolished. Another piece of Vietnam's heritage and a wonderful (if long neglected) public asset will be passed over to the best connected bidder.
Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
