With a tattoo of Ho Chi Minh over his heart, this man carries out the work of a couple of generations making Vietnamese bamboo tobacco pipes - known as "dieu cay". This strip on Hang Vai St in Hanoi's old quarter has proven popular with film-makers over the years. From memory it was a location in the Philip Noyce remake of Graham Greene's "The Quiet American" in 2001 - and it's been used in other films and TV commercials since then. The bamboo poles against a couple dilapidated French colonial mansions, creates one of those delightful Hanoi scenes that are around most corners - making this an incredibly photogenic city . Make sure the locals are happy for you to run off some shots. They'll let you know if they're not. Best to ask!
Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
