Introduction
The harbourside strip in Cat Ba is packed with cheap hotels that are great value for money most of the year. Beware though, Cat Ba is increasingly busy during Vietnamese summer holidays - especially on weekends in June and July. Availability can be tight and prices can fluctuate wildly.
We were there in late August and stayed in the Cat Ba Dream Hotel for US$15 per night. It was clean and comfortable with good views of the bay. Staff were about what you'd expect for US$15 per night. There wasn't much English spoken. Expect prices to double at minimum during the busiest months. Even then, these hotels are pretty good value for money given view and location. There are plenty of options similar to the Cat Ba Dream on the strip.
Cat Ba also has a number of resorts. We only had a quick look but they weren't too enticing. Your resort dollars are probably best spent elsewhere in Vietnam for now.
