Just down the road from the famed Banh Mi 25, Mr Hoan has been on the job making banh mi Vietnamese bread rolls, for the people of Hanoi, for almost three decades. The crowds might flock to Banh Mi 25, but we reckon this place is worth a look too. When these guys set up shop, life in Hanoi was very tough - a banh mi consisted of pate and herbs. Meat was an unimaginable luxury. Mr Hoan's offerings are more substantial these days. He's even added an English menu. He declared to me that his lack of English has prevented him from getting a good ranking on TripAdvisor - or attracting tourists. His place is focused on loyal long term locals. It's a pretty special place - a colonial era corner with some cool original features hiding above the makeshift roof. It feels like a real local banh mi.

Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
