Cha Ca is one of Hanoi’s legendary culinary specialties. It’s a noodle dish of river fish, turmeric, dill, peanuts. It hasn’t achieved the notoriety of other Hanoi classics like pho and bun cha. That’s partly because this is not a dish you’ll be chasing down every day. But it’s definitely a dish you should try while in the capital. Cha ca originates from a little outlet on the street of the same "pho cha ca” in the Old Quarter. These days though, we’re more inclined to eat nearby the original (it’s also on our list) at Cha Ca Thang Long. They pack in the locals each day - the cha ca is delicious - and not too oily. Don’t miss the pungent mam tom (fermented shrimp) sauce - essential for savouring the full flavour experience of the dish.

Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
