Introduction
Siem Reap offers plenty of options for quenching a temple explorer's thirst. Pub St is the most popular destination and well worth a look - but unless you’re seeking a deafening thud, you may find the nearby alleys more enticing for cocktails and conversation. The best places for a drink tend to be away from the Pub St madness.
Siem Reap's nightlife scene was pioneered by the young backpackers who began arriving in the mid and late 1990s just as the temples of Angkor were being rediscovered by the world. They've left their mark. The backpacking party scene still dominates the small town.
Gradually though, a wider range of options is becoming available to suit the diverse community of travellers converging on the temples. If you expect Siem Reap's nightlife offerings to be as diverse and interesting as its design and boutique hotel scene though, you'll be disappointed. There's still a way to go.
Siem Reap offers drinkers goodl value for money - the one proviso being that, like neighbouring Vietnam, Cambodia is also awash with fake liquor. It's by no means a perfect guide, but the cheaper your spirits get, the more likely they are to be fake.
Wine drinkers will find surprising good value in the bars and restaurants of Siem Reap - and the fake merchants haven't worked out how to concoct fake wine yet.
