While preparing for our Vietnam by the Book tour earlier this year, I picked up this copy of Graham Greene's The Quiet American from Sappho books, a local second hand bookshop in Glebe in Sydney. Extraordinary to imagine this cover being published at the height of the Vietnam War in 1966. Also hard to imagine getting such an explosive cover published in wartime in the US or Australia today. Times have changed. On the recent tour, we were reminded of how incendiary and how prescient Greene's book was, when written in the twilight years of French colonial rule in the 1950s. It's impact has held. Still a recommended read! Check our Vietnam by the Book over at Old Compass Travel (our travel company).
Rusty Compass listings are always independent. We list the places we think are worth knowing about. Our Featured Listings allow a small selection of businesses already recommended by us, to pay a fee for a place at the top of our list. That’s it. Featured Listings have no impact on reviews, or on the curation and independence of our lists.
