Cam Ranh Bay - the resorts
17 Sep 2017

The old US war-time base of Cam Ranh Bay is fast becoming one of Vietnam hottest beach destinations - for good reason. The setting is glorious.  There’s a flurry of resort development under way - we hope it doesn’t go too far.

Cam Ranh Bay - choosing a resort

The Cam Ranh Bay area enjoys the twin advantages of a magnificent strip of clean beach, and the convenience of being right by the main airport that serves Nha Trang - once part of the US naval base.

There isn’t a lot happening by way of restaurants and nightlife in the area so you’ll either be staying in your resort, or heading north to Nha Trang, if you need a break from the sun, sand, sea and resort dining.

We’ve visited two of the best - Fusion Resort Nha Trang and The Anam.  Fusion is a boutique resort with a modern European feel. The Anam is a more mainstream experience with a mix of hotel-style rooms and villas.  Both enjoy picturesque beachfront settings.

Fusion Resort Cam Ranh - Nha Trang

The Fusion people have established a reputation across Vietnam for modern, minimalist design, and spa-inclusive pricing - we’ve already listed their properties in Danang and Saigon. In Cam Ranh Bay the resort sits on a magnificent stretch of coast.

There are 72 suites and villas ranging in size from 100sqm - they're spacious. Most are set back off the beach across manicured grounds. This is a cleanly designed, polished property.  Staff are friendly and know what they're doing.

The Anam, Cam Ranh Bay

We didn’t receive a whole lot of love when we visited this place. We had an appointment to check it out and that finally happened after some messing around. The guests we spoke with were very happy though - that’s the main thing.

This is a big resort with 96 hotel-style rooms and 117 villas. It’s set on a generous piece of land so it doesn’t feel too crowded - apart from the hotel-style rooms.

The beach is superb and the resort is tastefully done. They’ve been generous in the provision of pools too - a necessary in a place of this size.

The resort website reads, “recapture a bygone era of colonial Vietnam”. It seems odd in a country that expended so much blood rejecting colonialism. Apart from some colonial-style tiles, we didn’t detect a lot of colonial-style design elements.

There’s a large open green space  between the beach and the villas - a nice touch that gives the beach welcome breathing space - great for families. It’s a tad bare right now - would be great to see them add some garden life.

Accommodations are split between a five story hotel-style block at the rear and a range of villas that vary based on location and the inclusion of a private pool. Most villas are around 50sqm.  There are a small number of larger villas as well.

It makes sense to pay extra for a villa. This is a remote area at the moment - you’ll spend a lot of time in the resort. A villa will be a better fit.
